Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

One experimental study according to OECD 301B confirmed that 1,3-butylene diacetate (CAS 1117-31-3) is readily biodegradable according to the OECD criteria (82% biodegradation after 28 d). The degradation via abiotic hydrolysis is not considered to be a relevant degradation pathway in the environment since QSAR results using HYDROWIN v2.00 resulted in DT50 values > 1 yr at pH 7. Considering the high water solubility (≤ 50 g/L) and the low potential for adsorption to organic soil and sediment particles (log Koc: 1 - 1.52, KOCWIN v2.00), the main compartment for environmental distribution is expected to be the surface water. Nevertheless, persistency in this compartment is not expected since the substance is readily biodegradable and it will be rapidly and ultimately degraded in sewage treatment plants and natural waters. Evaporation from the water phase into air and the transport through the atmospheric compartment is not expected in significant amounts for1,3-butylene diacetate based on the low Henry’s Law constant (< 1 Pa m³/mole (HENRYWIN v3.20); Müller, 2011) and the vapour pressure of 16.61 Pa. However, if released into air,1,3-butylene diacetate is susceptible to indirect photodegradation by OH-radicals with a DT50 value of 52.60 h (AOPWIN v1.92). Therefore, the potential for accumulation in air and the subsequent transport to other environmental compartments is low. The potential for bioaccumulation of1,3-butylene diacetate is assumed to be low based on the log Kow of 1.31.
