Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
No melting point is available, material decomposes at approx. 344 +- 0.5 K.
Executive summary:

The Phosphonitrile chloride catalyst, commonly named as Sparc catalyst, is mainly composed of the dimer [PCl3=N-PCl2=N-PCl3]+PCl6

- and the trimer

[PCl3=N-PCl2=N-PCl2=N-PCl3]+PCl6

-. It is used in the preparations Dow Corning® 3-0224, Dow Corning 3 -0225 and Dow Corning® 3-1224 in GLR technology to make high viscosity polymers. It is not listed on the European chemical inventory EINECS and had to be notified to the UK

Authorities. For the European notification purpose, the solid catalyst was named DCNS 170 (Dow Corning New Substance) and was tested by SafePharm Laboratories Ltd to determine the melting temperature. The test material decomposed from approximately 344 ± 0.5K, by differential scanning calorimetry, using ASTM E537-86 and Method A1 of Commission Directive 92/69/EEC.

As DCNS 170 decomposed, no value for the melting temperature is available.
