Additional information

Sodium hydride is a strong base which reacts nearly spontaneously when exposed to water forming sodium hydroxide.

Due to this reactivity with water and the formation of the strong base, Sodium hydroxide, this substance is predicted to be corrosive to both the skin and to eyes.

Justification for selection of skin irritation / corrosion endpoint:
Sodium hydride is a strong base which reacts nearly spontaneously when exposed to water forming sodium hydroxide. Thus available data for sodium hydroxide should be acceptable instead of conducting new studies.
Classification is based on sodium hydroxide data.

Justification for selection of eye irritation endpoint:
Sodium hydride is a strong base which reacts nearly spontaneously when exposed to water forming sodium hydroxide. Thus available data for sodium hydroxide should be acceptable instead of conducting new studies.
Classification is based on sodium hydroxide data.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: corrosive

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the classification for sodium hydroxide, this substance should be classified as Skin Corrosive, category 1A, H314, according to CLP.

However the test item is usually marketed in mineral oil, that as a stabilizer prevents flammability. For this reason this substance (sodium hydride in mineral oil) is not classified as corrosive.
