Hydrolysis is an important degradation reaction in the environment, for example in surface, ground, fog and pore water. Two main reaction mechanisms can be stated for a hydrolytic reaction Nucleophilic Substitution (SN1 and SN2) and Addition – Elimination. Important classes reacting under hydrolytical cleavage are for instance esters, amides, epoxides, carbamates and halogenated aliphates. 1,7-Octadiene is a simple hydrocarbon which does not bear any of these chemical groups and therefore is not expected to undergo hydrolysis under environmental relevant conditions (e.g. pH value ranging from 4 to 9).
