Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The chronic 14 days – NOEC (mortality) of Ca(OH)2 to sand shrimp Crangon septemspinosa of 32.0 mg Ca(OH)2/L (nominal) as determined by Locke et al. 2009 is above OECD test limits of 10 mg/L for chronic toxicity testing of aquatic invertebrates. However, the NOEC should be evaluated with caution since a pH increase and not the calcium ions may have been responsible for the observed effect. Calcium concentrations (~ 400 mg Ca/L, Sverdrup et al. 1942) of natural sea water are typically above the NOEC-value from Locke et al. 2009 indicating that the observed effect was not due to elevated calcium concentrations.
