Description of key information

No genetic toxicity study with Benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt, basic is available, thus the genetic toxicity will be addressed with existing data on the individual assessment entities cerium andbenzenesulfonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivs.

Benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt, basic is not expected to be mutagenic in bacteria, since the two moieties cerium andbenzenesulfonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivshave not shown gene mutation potential in bacteria.

Cerium

The genotoxic potential was assessed by performing an in vitro gene mutation study in bacteria. S. typhimurium TA 1535, TA 1537, TA98 and TA 100 as well as E.coli WP2 uvr A were used for the main study. Different concentrations of cerium chloride were analysed with and without metabolic activation in all strains. The test item, cerium chloride, was considered to be non-mutagenic with and without metabolic activation, under the conditions of this test.

4-undecylbenzenesulfonate was negative in the bacterial Ames test with S. typhimurium strains TA 98, TA 100, TA 1535, TA 1537 and TA1538 with and without metabolic activation (Schoeberl, 1993).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Benzenesulfonic acid, 4-dodecyl-, cerium(4+) salt, basic is not expected to be genotoxic, since the two moieties cerium andbenzenesulfonic acid, 4-C10-13-sec-alkyl derivshave not shown gene mutation potential in bacteria. Due to the lack of data, specifically for in vitro clastogenicity in mammalian cells, no decision can be made with regard to classification as germ cell mutagen.
