Description of key information

m-Xylylenebismaleimide is a solid at 20°C and 1013 hPa as determined visually during testing of physicochemical properties.

In a study according to OECD TG 102, GLP, the test item had an averaged melting point of 120°C. A sharp endothermic peak indicating a melting point could be observed (peak maximum: 126 °C/126 °C; extrapolated onset temperature: 120.68 °C/ 120.27 °C; rounded mean of both determinations: 120 °C).

In a study according to OECD TG 103 differential scanning calorimetry was used in oder to determine the boiling point of m-Xylylenebismaleimide. A boiling point could not be detected because the substance is considered to decompose. The DSC-curve showed two peaks: one exothermic peak (peak maximum: 250 °C/ 251 °C) followed by an endothermic peak (peak maximum: 471 °C). The first one is probably due to exothermic decomposition after melting. The second one may be a result of a partial boiling of the decomposed test item. Due to the fact that the thermogravimetric measurement as well as the DSC-measurement did not show a complete mass loss in that temperature range, no normal boiling point could be observed.

The relative density for m-Xylylenebismaleimide was determined to be 1.38 using the air comparison pycnometer method in a study conducted according to OECD TG 109.

The median particle size was D50 = 22.1 µm as determined in a study conducted according to OECD TG 110. A sample of the test item was brought into a laser beam via a powder dispersing cell. From the diffraction pattern the particle size distribution was calculated.

In a study conducted in accordance with OECD TG 105, GLP, the water solubility of m-Xylylenebismaleimide was determined to be 37.6 mg/L at 20°C and a pH of 5.3.

A surface tension of 60.39 mN/m was measured using the ring method in a test according to OECD TG 115.

The vapour pressure and the partition coefficient were determined by QSAR estimation using the EPISuite Software. The respective values are a vapour pressure of 5.81E-010 Pa at 25°C calculated with the MPBPWIN model (v1.43) and a partition coefficient of 1.60 at 25°C determined with KOWWINv 1.68.

Based on a test conducted according to UN Recommendation on the TRANSPORT OF DANGEROUS GOODS: Manual of Tests and Criteria, Rev. 6 (2015) and UN-Model_Regulations, Rev. 19 (2015), \/Dl 2263 Sheet 1, Grewer-Oven (1990), the test tiem is not considered to be auto flammable, the substance could not be self- ignited. There was also no sign of flammability as determined in a test according to UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids).

In accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), annex VII explosive properties testing does not need to be conducted as there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties in the molecule.
