Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Details on test solutions:
PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF TEST SOLUTION:
A stock solution was prepared at a concentration of 37.5 g/L in deionized water under stirring. This concentration corresponded to 10 g/L of active ingredient as required by the test guideline.
Test bottles were prepared with deionized water, synthetic sewage feed and different concentrations of test substance or reference substance.

Test organisms (species):
activated sludge
Details on inoculum:
- Inoculum: actived sludge collected from the treatment plant of urban (66%) and industrial (34%) liquid sewage located in San Rocco, Monza. Activated sludge was used up to two days after collection.
- Preparation of inoculum for exposure: Coars partcles present in the sludge were removed by settling for 10 miuntes. The mud samples were wahsed and analyzed to prepare the inoculum. The sludge was continuously aerated at the test temperature.
- Pretreatment: none
- suspended solids concentration: 1.5 g/L
Total exposure duration:
3 h
Post exposure observation period:
none
Nominal and measured concentrations:
0, 10, 100, 1000 mg/L (a.i)
Details on test conditions:
TEST SYSTEM

Description of key information

3h EC50 (activated sludge, domestic) >100 mg/L (respiration inhibition test, OECD 209)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
100 mg/L

Additional information

In general, alkyl sulfates show no toxic effects to auqatic microorganisms (HERA, 2002; OECD SIDS, 2005). One study on activated sludge respiration inhibition is available for C12-14 AS Zn (Z&S, 2014). Activated sludge originating from the mixed (urban/industrial) treatment plant were used. The 3-h EC50 value was determined to be >100 mg a.i./L (nominal concentration). Moreover, the test substance has been shown to be readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
