Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The toxicity of the read across substance, fatty acids, C16-18, esters with ethylene glycol, was assessed for the algal species Desmodesmus subspicatus (previous name: Scenedesmus subspicatus). Over the 72 hour time frame there was a positive effect on the growth of the cells compared to the control. Based on this the 72 hour EC50 of the substance is considered >100mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of fatty acids, C16-18, esters with ethylene glycol (CAS 91031-31-1) was investigated according to DIN 38412-9 under GLP conditions (Stelter, 1994). The green algae Scenedesmus subspicatus was exposed to nominal concentrations of 10 and 100 mg/L without a further filtration step. No inhibition of growth of S. subspicatus up to the limit of water solubility was observed resulting in an EC50 > 100 mg/L. An EC10 of 34 mg/L was determined since growth stimulation was observed in both concentrations used in this study. No inhibition of growth was observed. It can be concluded that fatty acids, C16-18, esters with ethylene glycol will not exhibit effects to aquatic algae up to the limit of water solubility.
