Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:

Multiple valid studies are available to assess the potential for skin sensitization for similar substances. Morris, 1993 is selected as the key study to meet the endpoint based on the test material being most chemcially similar to the substance being registerd.

In Morris, 1993, Hartley albino guinea pigs were tested according to the Beuhler method for the potential of the test substance to cause sensitization. Induction was done with a 50% w/v concentration of the test substance in Spectrum Mineral Oil Light, U.S.P. The primary challenge was performed using a 5% w/v concentration of test substance in Spectrum Mineral Oil Light, U.S.P. Following primary challenge, the incidence of grade 2 responses or greater in the test group (17 of 19) was compared to that of the naive control group (0 of 10). The incidence and severity of these responses in the test group were substantially greater than those produced by the naive control group indicating that sensitization had been induced.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
Low overbased alkylbenzene sulfonate salts that are chemically similar to EC No 271-877-7 have been tested in animal and human studies and found to be weak sensitizers. Multiple reliable studies exist demonstrating this effect. Based on these findings and the structural similarity of the substance being registered to the tested substances, EC No. 271-877-7 is expected to also be a weak sensitizer.

Justification for classification or non-classification

For the endpoint skin sensitisation, similar substances meet the criteria set out in Directive 67/548/EEC and also Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 for classification as causing skin sensitisation. Based on chemical similarity to those substances, classification of EC No. 271-877-7 is considered to be necessary.
