Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Relevant key information is given in the endpoint summaries on the respective properties.

For a summary and conclusion with regard to overall physical hazards and respective classification and labelling requirements, see below!

Additional information

A nearly complete set of physico-chemical information is available with all of the essential parameters determined according to established testing guidelines. Classification issues are discussed in the relevant endpoint summaries.

Information lacking is on viscosity: a testing proposal (OECD 114) is issued.

In addition, classification for corrosiveness to metals was checked. According to (1), the following substances and mixtures should be considered for classification in this class:

• substances and mixtures having acidic or basic functional groups;

• substances or mixtures containing halogen;

• substances able to form complexes with metals and mixtures containing such substances.

Item 2 (containing halogen) does apply to the submission substance 1-chloro-1,3-dimethylbenzene. Therefore, to determine any potential for metal corrosion of the submission substance, UN test C1 (UN Manual of Tests and Criteria; Sixth revised edition; United Nations 2015 (ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev.6/2015), section 37) was performed. The valid test was performed without any deviations from the guideline.

Independently from the experimental set up (dipped into test item solution; dipped half way into test item solution; hanging in the gas phase), neither for aluminium nor for steel could any measurable loss of mass be observed. Consequently, the submission substance is concluded to be non-corrosive to metals according to GHS criteria.

Based on a flash point for the liquid substance between 60°C and 93°C (71.9°C), according to UN GHS Rev. 6 (2015) a classification as flammable liquid category 4 (Combustible liquid) applies.

Based on the same data, according to REGULATION (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP) no classification for physical hazards is applicable.

With regard to classification for self-reactiveness, according to CLP, Annex I, 2.8.4.2. "The classification procedures for self-reactive substances and mixtures need not be applied if:

(a) There are no chemical groups present in the molecule associated with explosive or self reactive properties. Examples of such groups are given in Tables A6.1** and A6.2 in Appendix 6 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria;”

This applies for the submission substance.

No other classification requirements do exist with regard to physical hazards.
