Description of key information

The toxicity to the aquatic environment of Decyltrimethoxysilane was investigated in accordance with Annex VII of REACH by performing GLP-compliant short-term toxicity studies to freshwater aquatic invertebrates and algae.

Daphnia magna was identified as the most sensitive species based on the outcome of the studies with a 48h EC50 of 75.338 mg/L. Considering that the lowest L(E)C50 for Decyltrimethoxysilane is above 1 mg/L, the substance does not meet the criteria for classification as Aquatic Acute 1; H400 in accordance with Regulation (EC) N°1272/2008.

There is no available data on the chronic toxicity of Decyltrimethoxysilane to the aquatic environment. As the substance is being registered under REACH in the 1-10 tonnage band there is no requirement for information on long-term toxicity to aquatic species. Therefore the classification of the registered substance for chronic effects is based on the short-term toxicity of Decyltrimethoxysilane to the aquatic environment and its ready biodegradability.

The ready biodegradation study performed on Decyltrimethoxysilane concluded that the substance was degraded at 55% after 21 days. Therefore it is not considered as rapidly biodegradable.

Considering that the lowest L(E)C50 for Decyltrimethoxysilane is between 10 and 100 mg/L and the substance is not rapidly biodegradable, Decyltrimethoxysilane meets the criteria for classification as Aquatic Chronic 3; H412 in accordance with Regulation (EC) N°1272/2008.
