Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxicity to daphnia magna of:

reaction mass of 3,6,9,12-tetraoxahexadecan-1-ol and 2-(2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethanol: EC50>3200 (48hr) mg/L.

2-(2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethanol: EC50 (48hr) >500, 2201mg/L.

2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethanol: EC50 (24hr) 2850, 3200mg/L.

QSAR prediction of toxicity to daphnia magna of triethylene glycol butyl ether: 4800mg/L (48hr LC50)

QSAR prediction of toxicity to daphnia magna of tetraethylene glycol butyl ether: ~10000mg/L (48hr LC50)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The QSAR predicts that the toxicity to daphnia decreases with the increasing molecular weight within the series of ethylene glycol butyl ethers. The toxicity of tetraethylene glycol butyl ether is predicted to be significantly less than that of triethylene glycol which provides support to the use of data from the latter, or mixtures of the tri and tetra, as conservative alternative to data on the pure tetra. The key figure chosen is from a guideline test on a substance tthat was a mixture of tri and tetraethylene glycol butyl ether and is considered representative of the toxicity of pure tetraethylene glycol butyl ether.
