Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Principles of method if other than guideline:
The sample is dispersed in air directly in the measuring chamber, using the SCIROCCO sampling unit. The dry powder sample is manually placed in the sample hopper with the air supply and vacuum extration system connected. When the sample hopper is vibrated, the sample travels down the hopper until it eventually falls into the main feed mechanism. The rate at which sample is fed is controlled by the feed rate control, on the front panel, and the gap between the feed gates on the hopper. At the entrance to the main feed mechanism, there is a wire sieve filled with ball bearings. The bearings smooth the flow of sample as they effectively store particles within the array for a brief period. The vibrating bearings also break up loose agglomerates within the sample. As the sample falls through the sieve it is accelerated by compressed air. It then passes through tubing in the dispersion unit where agglomerates are further broken up. The sample is then fired through the air cell fitted to the Mastersizer, where it is measured. It is collected by the vacuum extraction system as the rear of the air cell.
