Description of key information
Reliable substance-specific information concerning the toxicity for strontium difluoride does not exist. Instead, toxicological information on very soluble inorganic fluoride (mainly sodium fluoride) substances and very soluble inorganic strontium substances were extrapolated to strontium difluoride considering that systemic effects mainly based on the concentrations of the Sr2+ and F- ions, which are the key concern of strontium difluoride.

Sodium fluoride tested negative (i.e. not sensitising) in sensitisation studies according to Buehler (EPA OPP 81-6). Furthermore, there are no indications that strontium (i.e., strontium dichloride hexahydrate) causes skin sensitization in a guinea pig maximization test.
Positive human experience with stronitum difluoride has not been reported. Based on read-across, it is assumed that strontium difluoride does not possess a skin sensitisation potential.

Justification for classification or non-classification
In conclusion, based on read across there is no evidence that strontium difluoride possesses skin sensitisation. Hence, in accordance with regulation (EC) no 1272/2008 strontium difluoride does not require classification and labelling as skin irritant substance.
