Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
The ability of a dust explosion of REWOCID SBU 185 P was investigated in the modified Hartmann apparatus (CIBA-GEIGY KÜHNER, Type MP 5). In addition, the possibility of exothermic reactions was examined in a open test vessel ( CIBA-GEIGY KÜHNER, Type MP 4) and under the supply of fresh air (oven according to Grewer), respectively.

Any other information on results incl. tables

Dust explosion:
The possibility of a dust explosion of REWOCID SBU 185 P was investigated in the modified Hartmann apparatus. Dust fires occurred in the range of 200 to 1000 g dust/m3.

Exothermic reactions:
The possibility of exothermic reactions was examined up to 200 °C in a open test vessel and under the supply of fresh air, respectively.

Using the open test vessel, endo- and exothermic reactions were not observed up to 200
°C at a heating rate of 1 K/min, while a slight formation of smoke was observed.

Under the supply of air, exothermic reactions
were not observed. At temperatures >=170 °C, slight formation of smoke was observed. The heating rate was 2.5 k/min , the air flux was 2L/min

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Dust fires of REWOCID SBU 185 P were observed in the modified Hartmann apparatus in the range of 200 to 1000 g dust/m3. In an open test vessel, endo- and exothermic reactions were not observed up to 200 °C while a slight formation of smoke was observed. Under the supply of air, exothermic reactions were not observed. At temperatures >= 170 °C a slight formation of smoke was observed.
