Toxicity to aquqatic algae and cyanobacteria

The purpose of this GLP study was to assess the potential effects of vinylbenzyl chloride to the freshwater green alga, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata according to OECD Guideline 201.

The study was performed for 72 hours with target nominal test concentrations of 0 (AAP medium control), 6.25, 12.5, 25.0, 50.0 and 100% of a 1000 mg vinylbenzyl chloride/L (AAP medium) nominally-dosed saturated solution. Cell density was determined at approximately 24, 48 and 72 hours (±1 hour from test initiation). Temperatures during the exposure period ranged from 22-24°C. The pH ranged from 6.4-7.8 and the light intensity ranged from 4510-5450 lux.

Test solutions were analyzed for vinylbenzyl chloride concentrations at test initiation, following 24 and 48 hours of exposure and at exposure termination by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC/ECD). The validity criteria were fulfilled.

The toxicity values for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata exposed to vinylbenzyl chloride over a 72-hour static exposure period and based on geometric mean measured concentrations were as follows:
