Liver homogenates were prepared according to the Ames method l4l after induction of liver enzymes by a single i p injection (500 mg/kg) of Clophen A50 (in Mazola oil) into each 30-g male B6C3 F, mouse (for the Ames test)

0, 0.1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 μg/plate. Preliminary toxicity tests had been done to determine the tolerated non-toxic doses for tests.

An overnight culture of each strain in Oxoid broth was used Liver homogenates were prepared according to the Ames method (Ames et al 1977) after induction of liver enzymes by a single i p injection (500 mg/kg) of Clophen A50 (in Mazola oil) into each 30-g male B6C3 F, mouse (for the Ames test) and 200-g male Sprague Dawley/Bio rat (for the fluctuation test) The plate incorporation test-system of Ames in triplicate experiments per dose was followed. The modified (Gatehouse and Delow, 1979) bacterial fluctuation test-system of Green et al 1976 was employed as the second test-system to reevaluate the mutagenic activity of some of these compounds

Seven commercially available wood-related compounds have been tested for mutagenicity by the use of the Ames and fluctuation test-systems. All compounds were found to be non-mutagenic
