Endpoint:
flash point of flammable liquids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
May 30 to June 07, 2007
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
The study was conducted according to an internationally recognized method, and under GLP. No deviation was reported. Test substance is adequately specified. Therefore full validation applies.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.9 (Flash-Point)
Version / remarks:
Directive 92/69/EEC of 31 July 1992
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
ISO 3679 (Determination of flash point - Rapid equilibrium closed cup method)
Version / remarks:
1983
Guideline:
ASTM D3278 (Standard test methods for flash point of liquids by small scale closed-cup apparatus)
Version / remarks:
1996
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Remarks:
signed on 2007-03-29
Type of method:
equilibrium method closed cup
Dynamic viscosity of test material:
(no data)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Storage conditions: refrigerator (between 0 and 4°C, under nitrogen)
Key result
Flash point:
42 °C
Atm. press.:
101.325 kPa

Detailed observations are available in the study report.

Measured Flash Point: 41°C

Atmospheric pressure: 97.4 kPa

Corrected Flash Point: 41.88°C

Accuracy: ± 2 °C

Interpretation of results:
Category 3 (flammable liquids) based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The flash point of the test substance is between the classification thresholds of 23 and 60°C (CLP and GHS criteria). Therefore, the substance is classified as a Flammable Liquid cat.3 (H226).
Executive summary:

The flash point of the test substance was measured under GLP according to ISO 3679 (listed in EU guideline A.9), using a closed cup equilibrium method. Duplicate determinations were performed.

The flash point of test substance has been determined to be 42 ± 2 °C, corrected to normal atmP.

Description of key information

The substance is classified as a Flammable Liquid cat.3 (H226) according to CLP and GHS criteria.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
42 °C

Additional information

A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized EU/ISO method (equilibrium closed cup) and under GLP, is available. It is considered as a key study, and the result is retained as key data.

This parameter may show some variations, due to the UVCB nature of the substance. In particular it should be noted that the FP study was conducted on the "standard" quality of the essential oil. However, based on typical compositions, all major constituents are common with the "high alpha pinene" quality, and classified not more severly than Flammable Liquid cat.3 (i.e. NCL or FL3). So no more critical classification is anticipated. No significant decrease in the global content of flammable constituents, so no declassification is anticipated either. Therefore variations in the compositions are not expected to impact the classification of the oil, and no additional confirmatory test was considered necessary on the "high alpha pinene" quality.

This study is relevant for the classification regarding flammable properties. (see IU Section 4.13 for justification of classification)
