Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Description of key information

In an acute toxicity study with Daphnia magna for  24 hours the LC 50 was > 100 mg/l. In the high dose of 100 mg/l 4/20 animals were immobilized (20%), in the second dose  of 58 mg/l  0/20 animals were immobilized (0%). The nominal concentrations were in the range of what has been determined analytically, namely 90 - 112 % of the nominal concentrations as average of 0 and 24 hours. However, the short exposure period (24 instead of 48 hrs)  may be taken with caution, the value for 48 hrs could be significantly lower.
The test was conducted according to OECD guideline 202 with the major deviation of a shorter exposure time.

Additional information

In a short term acute toxicity test with Daphnia magna the toxicity for fresh water invertebrates was evaluated.

No salt water invertebrate species was tested, as TGIC is not considered to be found in salt water in significant concentrations.

It is believed that TGIC poses no high risk to invertebrates in rivers and lakes.

The LC 50 of >100 mg/l has to be taken with caution as the exposure period was only 24 hours instead of 48 -72 hours. A longer exposure period is likely to show a more toxic potential of TGIC, but the expected range is 50 - 100 mg/l. This would still be in the range of the fish study.

It is concluded that TGIC has a moderate toxic potential towards fresh water invertebrates.
