Description of key information

The effects of silatrizole on the nitrogen transformation pathways in a LUFA standard field soil (type 2.3) was investigated in a GLP-compliant 28-day test conducted in accordance with OECD Guideline 216. Soil in the standard treatments was amended with ground lucerne (Medicago sativa) and treated with silatrizole at rates of 15, 150 and 1500 mg silatrizole/kg soil dry weight over a 28 day incubation period. The no effect concentration (NOEC) was determined at 150 mg silatrizole/kg dry soil and the lowest effect concentration (LOEC) at 1500 mg test item/kg dry soil for both the rate of nitrate production and the nitrate levels measured on Day 28. After 28 days exposure, silatrizole stimulated the production of nitrate at 1500 mg/kg dry soil, but the stimulation was insufficient in order to derive effects concentration at 10% maximal value (EC10), 25 % maximal value (EC25) and 50 % maximal value (EC50). There was a difference of +2.8 % between the solvent control (3.3 % using pooled controls) and the highest treatment rate after 28 days, in the rate of nitrate production, therefore, silatrizole can be assessed as having no long-term influence on nitrogen transformation in soils at concentrations ≤ 1500 mg silatrizole/kg dry soil. A difference of +/-25% after 28 days is considered to demonstrate an effect.
