Biodegradation in water: screening tests

A number of studies were predicted for the test compoundMethoxyacetophenone(CAS no 586-37-8) and were reviewed for the biodegradation end point which are summarized as below:

Estimation Programs Interface Suite (EPI suite) was run to predict the biodegradation potential of the test compound Methoxyacetophenone (CAS no 586-37-8). The screening test inherent to the biodegradability of the substance was calculated using the software BIOWIN v4.10. The results indicate that Methoxyacetophenone is expected to be readily biodegradable.

 

Biodegradation in water ability was predicted for the test compound Methoxyacetophenone(CAS no 586-37-8) using the SSS QSAR prediction model. The ready biodegradability of the test substanceMethoxyacetophenonewas estimated as 57.201% by using O2 consumption parameter. This result indicates thatMethoxyacetophenoneis moderately biodegradable in water.

Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

Estimation Programs Interface Suite (EPI suite) was run to predict the biodegradation in water and sediment potential of the test compoundMethoxyacetophenone(CAS no 586-37-8). The half life period ofMethoxyacetophenonein water is 360 hrs (15 days) therefore it is considered that the substance will qualify as not persistent as the half-life does not exceed the criteria of 40 days. So,it can be confirmed that the substance is readily biodegradable in water medium where as in sediment the half-life is 3240 hrs (135 days). Based on this value, it can be inferred that the substance is persistent in sediment medium and is not readily biodegradable probably due to the anaerobic conditions existing in most sediments.

Biodegradation in soil

The EPI Suite has estimated that Methoxyacetophenone is expected to be found predominantly in soil and its persistence estimate is based on its transformation in this medium. Its half-life in soil, 30 days, does not exceeds the threshold of 120 days as per CLP criteria. Therefore, Methoxyacetophenone is estimated to be not persistent in the soil environment.

Bioaccumulation: aquatic/sediment

The estimated bioconcentration factor (BCF) for m-Methoxyacetophenone was estimated (EPI suite, 2016) to be 1.977 L/kg, that does not exceed the bioconcentration threshold of 2000 L/kg. Thus it is concluded that test substance m-Methoxyacetophenone is not expected to bioaccumulate in the food chain because it does not exceed the BCF criteria.

Adsorption / desorption:

Adsorption (Log KOC) value of the substance m-Methoxyacetophenone was calculated using the software KOCWIN (v2.00).

The soil adsorption coefficient (Koc) value of m-Methoxyacetophenone is estimated to be 33.22 L/kg, (Log Koc: 1.5214) indicating that it is has low sorption to soil and sediment, moderate migration to ground water.

Supporting study from predicted database (Chemspider) also indicate that the test substance havelow sorption to soil and sediment and moderate migration to ground water.
