Description of key information

The partition coefficient, log POW, of MEXORYL SCK was calculated from the individual solubilities in n-octanol and in water, respectively, to be:
log POW = log10 [(<71.97 mg / L) / (>531866.13 mg / L) ] < -3.87 at 21.5°C
The pH in the aqueous phase was determined to be 5.7.
The substance has LOW potential for bioaccumulation (log Kow<4).

Additional information

One GLP study was performed in order to determine the partition coefficient of MEXORYL SCK (also called MEXORYL SBT).

First of all, based on a preliminary test, a good solubility in water and a very poor solubility in n-octanol were found indicating a partition coefficient below -2. Then, neither the HPLC-method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 nor the flask-shaking method according to OECD Guideline No. 107 were applicable for the determination of the partition coefficient of the surface active substance, the MEXORYL SCK.

For these reasons, the log POWvalue for the test item was estimated from its solubility in n-octanol and in water, respectively to be:

log POW = log10 [(<71.97 mg / L) / (>531866.13 mg / L) ] <-3.87 at 21.5°C

The pH in the aqueous phase was determined to be 5.7.

This estimation method is acceptable but considered as reliable with restrictions due to the lack of information . In particular, we have no information on the time of equilibration for the determination of the solubility in octanol ( we don't know if 24h is sufficient to reach equilibration.) and no information on the influence of the loading rate in the determination of the solubility in n-octanol and in water. In addition the method used allows only to determine an estimation of the log Kow without taking into account the interaction between the solvents.
