The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anitcipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

The respiration inhibition induced by methylionone in domestic activated sludge was investigated in a guideline study according to OECD 209. After an inoculation time of 30 minutes the test was terminated and an EC50>1000 mg/l was determined (BASF AG, 1996). In a second test investigating the growth inhibition in Pseudomonas putida as induced by methylionone an EC50 of 6640 mg/l (EC50=1000 mg/l) was detected after 16 hours of exposure (BASF AG, 1996).
