Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The surface tension of various C-chain pure hydrochlroides of primary fatty amines were determined experimentally according to OECD 115 guideline. Since primary amines exhibit a pKa of about 10.6 they appear protonated under environmental conditions. In order to determine their surface tension, the corresponding hydrochlorides thereof where used.

Additional information

The surface tension of various C-chain pure hydrochlroides of primary fatty amines were determined experimentally according to OECD 115 guideline. Since primary amines exhibit a pKa of about 10.6 they appear protonated under environmental conditions.

In order to determine their surface tension, the corresponding hydrochlorides thereof were used. These results are summarized in table 1 below.

Table 1

Substance surface tension (1g/L) surface tension (90% cmc) report
Dodecan-1-amine 51,3   10-74917.1
Tetradecan-1-amine 23,1 27,3 10-74917.2
Hexadecan-1-amine 23,9 32,8 10-74917.3
Octadecan-1-amine 24,3 34,7 10-74917.4
(Z)-octadec-9-en-1-amine 27,2 31,9 10-74917.5

The data presented here at 1g/L and at 90% of the respective cmc (water solubility) shows that - exept for the substance with 12 linear C-atoms (dodecyl) - the surface tensions are within the same order of magnitude. Thus, the mean value of

28.15 mN/m

will be used as the default value for primary amines.

Assuming a surface tension of 72.75 mN/m for pure water, the primary fatty amines can be regarded as being surface active, as their surface tension is below 60 mN/m.
