Details on test solutions:
PREPARATION OF TEST SUBSTANCE:
The product was added to the test water separately for each concentration by mixing with 1 g Tween 80 (0.1 g/liter of test water); subsequently aqua bidest. was added in small quantities and then this mixture was transferred into the test water using an ultra-turrax stirrer. Analogously 0.1 g Tween 80 /liter test water was added to a carrier control. Subsequently the fish were placed into the aquaria.

Test organisms

Test organisms (species):
Danio rerio (previous name: Brachydanio rerio)
Details on test organisms:
TEST ORGANISM
- Common name: zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio Ham. and Buch.)
- Source: West aquarium GmbH, D-W3422 BAd Lauterberg, FRG
- Length at study initiation: 2.96 cm (range: 2.5 - 3.6)
- Weight at study initiation: 0.23 g (range: 0.09 - 0.34)
- Feeding during test: 1 day before and during exposure food was withdrawn
- Corpulence factor of the batch: 0.89 (the corpulence factor K is calculated from the weight W (g) and the length L (cm) measured from the tip of the mouth to the distal end of the cuadal fin accroding to the formula K = 100 * w/l ** 3)

ACCLIMATION
- Acclimation period: 2 months
- Acclimation conditions: The fish were kept in a flow-through tank in tap water, not chlorinated, passed through an active carbon filter and aerated with oil-free air.
- Photoperiod: 16 hours light and 8 hours dark
- Water conditions: total hardness: about 2.5 mmol/l, acid capacity: about 5.5 mmol/L; oxygen content: > 60% of maximum saturation; pH: about 8.0; temperature: 21 -25 °C
- Type and amount of food: "Tetra min" standard feed for aquarium fish (Tetra-Werke, D-W4520 Melle, FRG)(ad libitum) and on workdays additionally live and frozen artemia
- Health during acclimation (any mortality observed): Mortality during the last 2 weeks of housing was 0%
- Medical treatment: none

TEST MEDIUM / WATER PARAMETERS
Test water: Municipal water of the city of Frankenthal, not chlorinated and passed through an active carbon filter.
- Carbon content: about 90 mg/l
- Magnesium content: about 10 mg/l
- Acid capcaity: about 5.5 mmol/l
- pH: about 7.5
- Intervals of water quality measurement: The test water is regularly assayed for chemical contaminants by the municipal authorities of Frankenthal and the technical services of BASF Aktiengesellschaft as well as for presence of microbes by a contract laboratory.

OTHER TEST CONDITIONS
- Photoperiod: 16 hours light and 8 hours darkness

EFFECT PARAMETERS MEASURED (with observation intervals if applicable) :
Mortality and symptoms were determined at 1, 4, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours.

TEST CONCENTRATIONS
- Range finding study: Based on the results of range finding studies using tap water and the carrier Tween 80 (neither mortality nor any toxic signs up to the concentration 10 000 mg/l) the concentration 100 mg/l was selected according to the requirements of OECD guideline (highest concentration to be tested). For classification of hazards to water the concentration 10000 mg/l was tested in parallel.
No further information on test conditions was stated.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE MAIN TEST:
The aquarium contents were coloured and cloudy. Sedimentary test substance was visible about 24 hours after the beginning.
Reference substance (positive control):
no
