Description of key information
Fisher SW (1984) reported no evidence of irritation or mortality (21 days) in earthworms treated with acetonitrile by topical application. Acetonitrile was a solvent control used in this study. Doses of 1 -4 ul were applied topically to worms weighing 4 -5 g. This corresponds to doses in the range of 156 mg/kg to 780 mg/kg.
According to the Integrated Testing Strategy for assessing the effects on terrestrial organisms (Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment, Chapter 7c End Point Specific Guidance, table 7.11.2) if there is no indication for high absorption (i.e. logKow<5) and there is no indication that the substance is very toxic (acute EC50>1mg/l) and the PEC/PNEC<1 (where the PNEC is based on the equilibrium partitioning method) then no toxicity testing is required. The chemical safety assessment indicates this to be the case. On the basis of this assessment, testing of soil organisms is not justified.
Based on the use pattern for this substance, direct and indirect exposure of birds is unlikely. There is also a sufficient mammalian dataset on this substance to allow reliable extrapolation to predict toxicity to avian species if required.
