Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

After evaporation or exposure to the air, the product will be slowly degraded by photochemical processes.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life in air:
53.5 h
Degradation rate constant with OH radicals:
0 cm³ molecule-1 s-1

Additional information

Measured rate constants of butan-1 -ol are similar to calculated ones. For example, Atkinson (1989) reported measured rate constants for indirect photodegradation of 7.2 and 8.31 E-12 cm3 molecule-1 sec-1, resulting in half times for OH-degradation of 53.5 and 46.3h, respectively. This is supported by a calculation using SRC AOP v1.92, revealing a rate constant of 6.89 E-12 cm molecule-1 sec-1 and resulting in a half time of 55.9 hours for indirect photodegradation. Therefore, degradation of butan-1 -ol by phototransformation is of minor importance.
