Acute tests on all three trophic levels were performed to examine the aquatic toxicity of formic acid. Fish turned out to be the most sensitive species revealing an LC50 (96h) of 130 mg/L. Effects of formic acid towards algae and daphnia were found in the same range providing a , an ErC50 (72h) of 1000 mg/L and an EC50 (48h) of 365 mg/L, respectively. Acute values for marine organisms are available indicating a low hazard potential. The acute marine values are all within the range of the freshwater values, sometimes the marine species are even less sensitive than the respective freshwater organsim. Regarding chronic effects a long-term NOEC (21d) of 100 mg/L for aquatic freshwater invertebrates is available. Thus, with high probability formic acid is considered acutely not harmful for aquatic organisms.
