Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The reports Norden, 2011 and Miljødirektoratet, 2013 give an overview of results of monitoring data in the Nordic EU countries.

There are considerable uncertainties as to whether reported concentrations were above the LOQ or not as LOQ was not identified.

Air samples: In summary, EBP was detected at very low amounts. The report states that there was 20-40% error in the analysis.

This level of error may affect the significance of findings reported as being >LOD.

STP sludge: 4.5 to 160 ng/d dw

Sediment in Urban harbor areas:  5 of 11 samples < LOD, others very low: 0.042 to 1.6 ng/g dw. LOQ is not stated.

Eggs: not stated if the shell was removed, uncertain results. Results < LOD to .45 ng/g f.w most below1 ng/g fw

Fish muscles: not clear if skin was removed and contamination from the outsode coudl have occurred: Only LOD stated. It is not clear if any of the concentrations reproted was > LOQ. In any case they were very low. All below 0.16 ng/g d.w.

Fish liver: data reporting with regard to LOD and LOQ is contradictory. 6 of 7 data were reported to be < LOQ one was reported with a value of 0.092 ng/g f.w. while to LOQ is stated to be ).54, 1 or 1.6 ng/g f.w..

More recent data are summarized in the literature overview "2019 update". The European data available for birds’ eggs and fish muscle and liver were either detected in the the pg/g range or below LOD. This is not inconsistent with the earlier Nordic locations.

In addition to birds’ eggs and fish muscle and liver, data are also available for shellfish at the

local marine scale (<0.84 pg/g ww - 20.1 pg/g ww and 29 ± 50 pg/g), zebra mussel and

zooplankton (both <LOD) at the local scale, and bird liver (<0.025 ng/g ww), seal blubber

(<0.12 - 0.30 ng/g ww, more than 80% < MDL) and polar bear adipose tissue (<0.13 ng/g ww)

at the continental background scale. Data are also reported for tree bark (<LOD – 3.9 ng/g lipid

weight, or 0.13 ng/g using reported lipid %).

House dust: values of 12 ro 150 ng/g are reported, but they are bound to polymer matrices.

In conclsion very low levels have been detected so far in the monitoring programs and are consistent with modelled exposure estimates.
