Additional information

The substance is not classified for the environment (or human health). It is therefore considered unnecessary to derive PNECs, as a full PEC/PNEC comparison is not required.

Conclusion on classification

The substance is not classified for the environment based on the results of acute toxicity testing in both fresh and marine water species, on fish (Rainbow trout and turbot), invertebrates (Daphnia magna and Acartia tonsa) and algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Skeletonema costatum), plus relevant physico-chemical properties such as water solubility and n-octanol/water partition coefficient.

The results of the acute toxicity studies all gave results (LC/EC50) above the threshold criteria (100 mg/l) for classification for the environment. These results are listed below:

Acute toxicity to fish (freshwater): 96 hr LC50: >1800 mg/l (or >936 mg/l as active ingredient); NOEC: 1800 mg/l (or 936 mg/l as active ingredient).

Acute toxicity to fish (marine): 96 hr LC50: >1831 mg/l (or >952 mg/l as active ingredient); NOEC: 1831 mg/l (or 952 mg/l as active ingredient).

Acute toxicity to fish (marine): Limit test at 320 mg/l; NOEC: 320 mg/l

 

Acute toxicity to Daphnia magna (freshwater): 48 hr EC50: >2000 mg/l (or >1040 mg/l as active ingredient); NOEC: 2000 mg/l (or 1040 mg/l as active ingredient).

Acute toxicity to Acartia tonsa (marine): 48 hr EC50: 7267 mg/l; NOEC: 3200 mg/l

 

The most sensitive species was the algae, which gave the following results:

 

Acute toxicity to Skeletonema costatum (marine): 72 hr EC50(growth rate): 1204 mg/l; NOEC: 320 mg/l

Acute toxicity to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (freshwater): 72 hr EC50(growth rate): >100 mg ai/l; 72 EC50 (yield): 38 mg ai/l; NOEC: 10 mg ai/l

 

The algal EC50 result of 38 mg ai/l is based on yield. However, in accordance with CLP regulations classification from algal studies shall be based on growth rate, which gave a result of >100 mg/l and is therefore not classified.

 

The substance is not readily biodegradable but does not meet the criteria for environmental classification in Chronic Category 4 as it is water soluble (determined to be miscible with water in all proportions) and has a very low partition coefficient of log10Pow <-4.23.
