Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Phosphoryl trichloride reacts rapidly with water/moisture to liberate hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acids, which will subsequently dissociate in aqueous conditions to environmentally ubiquitous ionic species.

Hydrolysis:

The halflife of phosphoryl trichloride in water at 23 °C is estimated to be less than 10 seconds.

Biodegradation:

Study technically not feasible: The registered substance phosphoryl trichloride, CAS no. 10025-83-3, EC no. 233-046-7 is an inorganic substance.

Adsorption:

Study scientifically not necessary: “In water, phosphoryl trichloride hydrolyzes to phosphoric acid  and hydrochloric acid with t1/2 < 10 seconds (Riess, 2002): POCl3 + 3 H2O → H3PO4 + 3 HCl” (OECD SIDS for phosphoryl trichloride, 2004).  Based on the physicochemical properties the corresponding hydrolysis products hydrochloric acid/hydrogen chloride, CAS no. 7647-01-0, EC no. 231-595-7 and phosphoric acid, CAS no. 7664-38-2, EC no. 231-633-2 can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption.
