Description of key information

The assessment of the fish toxicity of phenothiazine was determined on the results with rainbow trout in a GLP monitored acute fish toxicity study according to OECD 203 and EU C.1 The media were prepared according to OECD 23 (difficult substances).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Fresh water fish

Fresh water fish
Effect concentration:
0.579 mg/L

Additional information

In the key study the mortality of young rainbow trouts in media containing phenothiazine was studied. The values for NOEC (Observation of clinical signs), LC0 and LC100 were determined and the value for the LC50 was calculated.

Because the substance has a low water solubility the media were prepared following OECD 23 guideline for difficult substances.

At nominal 100 mg/L all fish died within 48 hours, while no mortality in the 96 hours period was observed at a concentration of 50 mg/L, whereas the threshold for no clinical signs was determined to be 25 mg/L. Based on the mortality the EC50 was calculated to be 70.7 mg/L nominal. The corresponding calculated values based on the chemical analysis are: NOEC 0.421 mg/L, LC50 is 0.579 mg/L and the LC100 is 0.795 mg/L.

The substance is classified as very toxic to fish.
