The determination was carried out using a White Electrical Institute Co.Ltd.torsion balance for surface and interfacial tension measurements and a procedure according to Method A.5 Surface Tension of Commission Regulation (EC)No440/2008 of 30 May 2008, Method 115 of the OECD guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 Jully 1995 and GLP.The surface tension result was not corrected using the Harkins-Jordan correction table as the correction is not applicable to the apparatus used.This deviation has been considered not to have affected the integrity of the study.

Excess, undissolved test item in water has previously been demonstrated to form a dispersion which could not be excluded by either centrifugation of filtration techniques. However irrespective of this, determination of surface tension on the resulting dispersions (loaded at a nominal 1.0 g/l) was continued due to its relevance to environmental impact appraisal, with dispersion in water remaining a viable route for exposure. At a nominal concentration of 1.0 g/l in water, the test item formed a uniform dispersion on water. Substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m are regarded as being surface active. This was consistent with the structure of the test item, having a hydrophilic phosphonic acid "head" and a hydrophobic alkyl chain "tail", a direct analogue of the recognized anionic surfactant classes of alkylsulfonates and soaps.
