Chloroethane is a gaseous substance that will be mainly present in air. Thus photolysis by hydroxyl radical oxidation in the atmospheric compartment is the degradation process that is mainly relevant for the substance. For photolysis in air a half-life range of 39.73 days was calculated for the substance. Due to the high vapour pressure of the substance an accumulation in natural waters is unlikely. However, if present in water the substance will be hydrolytically degraded to Ethanol and HCl. The estimated half-life for hydrolytic degradation ranges from 28 days – 2.6 years.
