In accordance with the ECHA guidance R7a (Jul. 2015) and the Guidance on the Application of the CLP criteria (June 2015), trifluoroethanol is not considered as substance which, in contact with water, emits flammable gazes because the chemical structure of the substance does not contain metals or metalloids and trifluoroethanol is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture.

Based on the retained flashpoint value of 29.5°C, Trifluoroethanol is classified as flammable liquid, category 3 (H226)

Additional information

As the substance is a liquid, the relevant test for classification regarding flammable poperties is the flashpoint measurement. A fully reliable experimental study is presented under section 4.11.

Based on the chemical structure and experience, no flammable properties are anticipated in contact with air or water, or no self-heating for liquids, therefore studies were deemed unnecessary.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the flash point value of 29.5°C, TFE is classified as flammable (liquid) category 3 according to Regulation N°1272/2008 (CLP).
