Description of key information

Photochemically initiated oxidation is the major loss process for dimethyl sulphide. The presence of NO appears to be necessary for the photo-oxidation of DMS to occur rapidly. This is supported by results which show direct photolysis of DMS yielded a variety of oxidation products in a reasonably short time. The authors conclude that since the irradiation used in the study involved somewhat higher energy than that of sunlight, they could not unambiguously apply the studies to a discussion of the fate of DMS in the lower atmosphere.

Additional information

Cox (1974) is a published study following scientific principles. No guidelines were followed, but the description and information provided is considered adequate for assessment.

Bently (1972) is a non-guideline study following scientific principles. The authors state that the results cannot be unambiguously applied to the fate of DMS in the lower atmosphere. The study is considered reliable but not fully applicable to this endpoint.
