Test system

Type of coverage:
semiocclusive
Preparation of test site:
shaved
Vehicle:
water
Controls:
not required
Amount / concentration applied:
TEST MATERIAL
- Amount(s) applied (volume or weight with unit): 0.5 g of the test material, moistened with 0.5 ml of distilled water
- Concentration (if solution): Not applicable
Duration of treatment / exposure:
4 hours
Observation period:
Approximately one hour following the removal of the patches, and 24, 48 and 72 hours later, the test sites were examined for evidence of primary irritation and scored.
Number of animals:
Three
Details on study design:
On the day before the test each of a group of three rabbits was clipped free of fur from the dorsal/flank area using veterinary clippers. Only animals with a healthy intact epidermis by gross observation were selected for the study.

TEST SITE
- Area of exposure: 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm
- % coverage: No data available
- Type of wrap if used: Surgical adhesive tape and elasticated corset

REMOVAL OF TEST SUBSTANCE
Four hours after application the corset and patches were removed from each animal and any residual test material removed by gentle swabbing with cotton wool soaked in distilled water.

SCORING SYSTEM: Draize J H (1959) "Dermal Toxicity" In: Appraisal of the Safety of Chemicals in Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics. Association of Food and Drug Officials of the United States, Austin, Texas, p.46-59.

Irritant / corrosive response data:
Red coloured staining was noted at all treated skin sites throughout the study but did not affect evaluation of skin responses.
No evidence of skin irritation was noted during the study.
Other effects:
Two animals showed expected gain in bodyweight and one animal showed no gain in bodyweight during the study.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Interpretation of results:
not irritating
Remarks:
Migrated information Criteria used for interpretation of results: EU
Conclusions:
The test material produced a primary irritation index of 0.0 and was classified as non-irritant to rabbit skin according to the Draize classification scheme. No corrosive effects were noted.
Executive summary:

In a primary dermal irritation study (0959/0238), male New Zealand White rabbits were dermally exposed to 0.5 g of INK BH11 M moistened with distilled water for 4 hours to a 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm area of skin. Animals then were observed for 3 days. Irritation was scored by the method of the Draize classification scheme. No dermal irritation was observed at any sites on the three rabbits. In this study, INK BH11 M is not classified as a dermal irritant.
