The flammability of liquids is assessed on the basis of flash point. A flash point of 73°C and a measured boiling point of 177.7°C, indicate that the substance should not be classified as a flammable liquid according to the criteria of EC Regulation 1272/2008.
There is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in handling and use that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air) or flammable in contact with water.
Therefore, in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, there is no need to conduct further flammability testing.
In other available sources, THFA was reported to have a lower flammability limit of 1.5% and an upper flammability limit of 9.7% at temperature of 71.5 - 107˚C. This indicates that mixtures of between 1.5% and 9.7% in air will burn in the presence of an ignition source (at temperatures above the flash point).
Justification for classification or non-classification
The substance is not classified for flammability as it has a flash point of 73°C.
