Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Male and female Poecilia reticulata were exposed to sodium bromide in a semi-static toxicity to reproduction test. Observations of mortality, abnormal behaviour and reproductive effects along with histopathological studies were used to determine the NOEC value. Histopathological changes were noted at concentrations of 78 mg Br-/L and above. The lowest NOEC for the sodium bromide for reproductive effects in fish is 10 mg/L

Additional information

Potassium bromide is an inorganic salt that dissociates to its composite ions in aqueous solutions at environmental pH and temperature. Comparison of the available data on the various bromide salts have shown that the bromide ion is the relevant ion for determination of the toxicological profile with simple cations such as potassium, sodium or ammonium, that are ubiquitous in nature, having little or no influence on the bromide ion properties. It is therefore justified to read-across data from other inorganic bromide salts to potassium bromide.

The lowest NOEC for the sodium bromide for reproductive effects in fish is 10 mg/L from the study by Canton et al., 1983. An additional study (Wester P.W.et al., 1988;) also found the NOEC based on histopathological changes to be 10 mg/L but the study did not evaluate the reproductive effects of the test substance. Organs affected included the thyroid, gonads, skeletal muscle and mesenteric arteries.
