First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air at once. Initiate artificial
respiration and supply oxygen if needed. Keep victim warm
and at rest. If conscious give water to relieve irritation
of the throat. Seek immediate medical attention.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Flush the eyes with copious amounts of clean, lukewarm water
(remove contact lenses if easily possible). Hold the
victims eyelids open and pour water slowly over the
eyeball(s) at the inner corner, letting water run out of the
outer corner to rinse the substance out of the eye.

Seek immediate medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Skin contact can be life threatening. In case of contact,
immediately flush skin copiously with water for at least 15
minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Do
not use hot water. The victim may not be aware of initial
skin contact due to the local anaesthetic effect of phenol.
Obtain medical attention immediately.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. If the victim is conscious rinse
mouth with water and give water to drink. Do not give
carbonated drinks. Keep victim warm and quiet. Seek medical
attention immediately.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Small fire: Use dry chemical powder, sand or carbon dioxide

Large fire: Use water spray, fog or foam. Do not use water
jet.

Product arising from burning: The substance is combustible and will burn if involved in a
fire, evolving noxious fumes (eg oxides of carbon).

Protective equipment: Full protective clothing and self-contained breathing
apparatus must be worn.


Cool exposed containers with water. Stop discharge at source
if this can be achieved safely. Stay upwind and use water
spray to known down vapour. Confine run water by diking the
area.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Evacuate personnel from immediate vicinity. Eliminate all
sources of ignition.


Wear appropriate personal protective equipment conforming to
the relevant national or international standards as
mentioned in section 2.3.10.



Use water spray to reduce vapours. Prevent entry into
sewers, basements or confined areas; dike if necessary.
Absorb spillages of solutions with a suitable inert material
(eg sand or soil). Carefully transfer the spillage to waste
containers, or use a sealed industrial vacuum machine.
Containers filled with waste material must be labelled in
the same way as the original containers.


Neutralise the residue with a dilute solution of sodium
carbonate.


Dispose of waste material by incineration or landfill in
accordance with local regulations.

Handling and storage

Handling: The substance should be stored, handled and used in
conditions of good industrial hygiene and in conformity with
any local regulations in order to avoid exposure.



Engineering controls are necessary to reduce exposure to the
substance.



When exposure cannot be prevented or adequately controlled
appropriate personal protective equipment should be worn.
Such protective equipment should conform to the appropriate
international or national standards as follows;

Chemical protective gloves to Standard EN374

Chemical resistant clothing to Standard EN368

Eye protection to Standard EN166

Chemical protective boots.


When necessary appropriate respiratory protection should be
used. e.g. self-contained breathing apparatus.


The standards mentioned above should be regarded as a
minimum. It is recommended that a specialist be consulted
prior to handling this substance.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.


Keep containers tightly closed when not in use.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Hermetic metallic reservoir or cisterns with sizes ranging
from 5 litres to 60 cubic metres.

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Discharge to the environment will be kept to a minimum.
Recovery from minor spillages or accidental discharge is not
economically or technically feasible, and such waste
material will be disposed of in accordance with local
regulations. In principle, it may be possible to recover
larger spillages of uncontaminated material for subsequent
use.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Spillages can be neutralised with a dilute solution of
sodium carbonate.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Contaminated containers or spillages of solutions mixed with
inert material (eg sand or soil) may be disposed of by
landfill at an authorised tip in accordance with local
regulations.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: The substance can be disposed of by incineration by burning
under controlled conditions at a licensed waste treatment
processor in accordance with local regulations. Stack gases
should be scrubbed, because noxious fumes (eg oxides of
carbon) could be formed.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: The substance should not normally be discharged directly to
the sewage system or the aqueous environment.
