For the hazard assessment several studies have been performed using EDTA acid or its salts. For justification of read-across please refer to IUCLID 5 3, Chapter 13.

For the determination of biodegradation in soil non-standard investigations under various conditions show that EDTA can be biodegraded in soil under aerobic conditions. The rate of EDTA degradation was determined in three natural soils after 20 d of exposure. 14 % of a 2 mmol/kg EDTA treatment (equivalent to 584 mg/kg soil) was degraded in the three used soils under test conditions (Wen, 2009). This is supported by Tiedje (1975), where EDTA is enhanced biodegradable.
