Description of key information

Additional information

Appearance

At ambient temperature and pressure, 2-butyl-2-ethylpropanediol is a white crystalline solid with a mild odour (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Melting point

The melting point of 2-butyl-2-ethylpropanediol is 314 K (41 °C) (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Boiling point

The boiling point of 2-butyl-2-ethylpropanediol is 537 K (264 °C) at 101.3 kPa (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Density

The density of 2-butyl-2-ethylpropanediol is 0.97 at 20 °C (relative to water at 4 °C) (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Granulometry

A waiver is proposed for this data requirement as the substance is used in a non granular form. BEPD is a solid at room temperature.

Vapour pressure

The vapour pressure of 2-butyl-2-ethylpropanediol was predicted to be 0.08 Pa at 25 °C using SPARC and MPBPWIN calculation methods. Since the vapour pressure was predicted to be below 1.0 Pa, and such low vapour pressures are experimentally very difficult to perform. Therefore, performing a test was considered technically not feasible. Substances with low vapour pressure are not likely to vaporise and become airbone (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Partition coefficient

The partition coefficient (log Kow) for 2-butyl-2-ethylpropanediol is 2.2 at 25 °C (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Water solubility

The solubility of 2-butyl-2-ethylpropanediol in water is 8.8 g/L at 20°C (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Surface tension

The surface tension of 2 -butyl-2-ethylpropanediol is 49 mN/m at 20°C (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Flash point

The flash point of 2-butyl-2-ethylpropanediol is 409 K (136 °C) (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp Holding AB, 2009).

Autoflammability

According to “Endpoint specific guidance R.7.1.12.1” self-ignition temperature does not have to be conducted since the substance is a solid with a melting point <160°C.

Flammability

2-Butyl-2-ethylpropanediol is reported to be non flammable (Analytical Chemistry, Perstorp AB, 2009).

Explosiveness

Examination of the structure indicates that there are no groups associated with explosive properties. Therefore, negative results can be predicted and no testing for explosive properties has been carried out.

Oxidising properties

Due to the structural composition of the substance it is not considered to be oxidising. The substance does not contain any of the components listed in “Endpoint specific guidance R.7.1.13.3 table R.7.1-29”. According to “Endpoint specific guidance R.7.1.13.4 no experimental testing has to be conducted if the substance due to structural composition is considered not to be oxidising.

Stability in organic solvents

The stability in organic solvents is not considered critical to ensure confidence in other test results for other endpoints. Therefore testing is not needed to be conducted according to “Endpoint specific guidance R.7.1.16”.

Dissociation constant

The calculation program SPARC has been used for the prediction and it indicated that the substance is not an ionisable compound since no change in charge was obtained at different pH. According to “Endpoint specific guidance R.7.1.17.1” the dissociation constant does not have to be conducted for substances that lack ionisable functional groups.

Viscosity

According to “Endpoint specific guidance R.7.1.18.4” viscosity determination is not required for solids.
