Description of key information

As 1,1,1-trichloroethane has no specific herbicide or activity testing on higher aquatic plants is not required. The literature contains no information on the studies conducted in this area therefore it is presumed to address this data requirement by waiver as the risk of exposure is low.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The distribution model used in the Euro Chlor review indicates that there is very little deposition to the aquatic environment and virtually none to the terrestrial environment. This summary of existing data and the risk assessment conducted by De Rooij et al 2004 concluded that the biological action of 1,1,1-trichloroethane can be classified as basic rather than specific. As 1,1,1-trichloroethane has not been shown to have herbicidal properties and the PEC/PNEC ratios for algae are sufficiently high current European guidance relating to other directives such as 91/414 would indicate that additional testing on aquatic higher plants is not required
