Description of key information

The toxicity of 2,3-Epoxypropyl neodecanoate, oligomeric reaction products with toluene-4-sulfonic acid) to the unicellular freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was determined according to the principles of OECD 201. The aim of the study was the determination of NOEL, LOEL, EL10 - , EL20- and EL50 - values of growth rate and yield over a period of 72 hours.
The study was performed under static conditions with an initial cell density of 5089 cells/mL, with water accommodated fractions (WAF) with a dilution factor of 2 (nominal): 6.25 - 12.5 - 25.0 - 50.0 - 100 mg/L. Per definition of the WAF, all terms related to concentration levels will be given as loading levels. Three replicates were tested for the test item loading levels and six replicates for the control. The environmental conditions were determined to be within the acceptable limits.
The TOC content (according to DIN EN 1484) of the test item in various loading levels and the control was determined from freshly prepared and old test media after 0 and 72 hours of exposure, respectively.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
12.5 mg/L

Additional information

In this study 2,3-Epoxypropyl neodecanoate, oligomeric reaction products with toluene-4-sulfonic acid was found to inhibit the growth of the freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata after 72 hours with the following effect values (nominal test item loading levels): The EL50-values with 95 % confidence intervals for inhibition of specific growth rate (ErL50) and yield (EyL50) after 72 hours were > 100 mg/L and 41.8 (31.4 – 59.7) mg/L, respectively. The NOEL-values for inhibition of specific growth rate and yield after 72 hours were 12.5 mg/L and < 6.25 mg/L.

All effect values are given based on nominal test item loading levels.
