In the key study (Migchielsen, 2013c) the toxicity of the test material to algae was determined in a fresh water growth inhibition test with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The study was performed under GLP conditions and in line with standardised guidelines. Algae were exposed at the maximum soluble concentration of the test material in a combined limit/range finding test, under static conditions for 72 hours.

Due to the low solubility of the test material, test solutions were prepared as Water Accommodated Fractions (WAFs) at loading rates of 1.0, 10 and 100 mg/L an additional test solution was prepared at a ten-fold dilution of the 1.0 mg/L WAF.

Analyses of the samples taken from the WAF prepared at 100 mg/L showed that the measured concentration could not be detected. Hence, the measured concentration was below 0.18 mg/L, the concentration present in the lowest calibration solution. Despite the fact that actual exposure concentrations could not be measured, it was considered that the maximum soluble concentration in algal test medium was tested.

Under the conditions of the test, no significant differences were recorded between the values for growth rate or yield at any of the test concentrations when compared to the control group. Furthermore, microscopic observations at the end of the test revealed a normal and healthy appearance of the algae exposed to the WAF prepared at 100 mg/L when compared to the control.

Since no signs of toxicity were observed in any of the treated samples, the EL50 and NOELR are considered to exceed the maximum solubility of the test material.
