Description of key information

In the key study an EC50 for Daphnia magna of 2.7 mg/L. could be determined after 48 h of exposure.
Nevertheless that endpoint is not used for PNEC-calculation as PNEC-values were calculated on the basis of a HC5-approach.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A GLP-study on aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) in static systems is available. In the key-study of Stelter (1995) according to the EU-guideline 92/69/EWG, with alcohol ethoxylates of a chain length of C12 - C13 and a degree of ethoxylation of 9 an EC50 of 2.7 mg/L (purity of test material: 100%) was determined. In addition read-across to a supporting study conducted with C12 -14 alcohol ethoxylates (CAS 68439 -50 -9) is prepared as the tested alcohol C12 -18 ethoxylate is highly ethoxylated (9EO) and thus might be of lower toxicity as lower ethoxylated mixtures. In the study of Scholz (Sasol, 1993) on alcohol ethoxylates with a chain length of C12 - C14 and a degree of ethoxylation of 2 an EC50 of 0.53 mg/L (corresponding to 0.39 mg a.s./L based on the content of active substance in the test substance: 73% w/w) was determined. Regarding the composition of both mixtures for the alcohol C12 -18 ethoxylates even a lower toxicity is expected as for the C12 -14 mixture. Thus the toxicity of alcohol C12 -18 ethoxylates is expected to be between 0.39 mg a.s./L and 2.7 mg/L.
