Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The biodegradability of the test item was assessed using the OECD guideline N°301B  "ready biodegradability: CO2 Evolution test".   5 mg/L of the test item was exposed to the activated sludge microorganisms with culture medium in sealed culture vessels in the dark at approximately 21 degrees C for 28 days. Degradation of test material was assessed by determining the carbon dioxide produced. After 28 days of exposure 44% degradation of the test item was recorded. Therfore the criteria for ready biodegradability were not fulfilled and the substance cannot be regarded as readily biodegradable. In addition, QSAR screening test using the EpiSuite tool- BIOWIN v4.10, has determined that the test item is not ready biodegradable based on SMILE notation of the organic molecule (Interpretation results of BIOWIN3 AND BIOWIN5). Considering the weight of evidence status of persistency (Interpretation results of BIOWIN2, BIOWIN6 and BIOWIN3), the substance is considered as borderline according result displayed by BIOWIN3.
In conclusion, observation made through the testing are supported by QSAR modelling and additional studies may be required to enlighten the persistency property of the test item.

Additional information

With a degradation rate of 44% in a stringent ready test for biodegradation, it is expected that the substance is inherently biodegradable. However this would need to be confirmed in a test for inherent biodegradability.
