Based on the results of a valid QSAR Prediction model, 1,4-diethylbenzene can be considered to have a moderate binding capacity, according to the following classification:

 

Koc10.0 "very low binding capacity"

10.0 >Koc 100.0 "low binding capacity"

100.0 >Koc 1000.0"moderate binding capacity"

1000.0 >Koc 10000.0"high binding capacity"

Koc > 10000.0"very high binding capacity"

 

According to MCCALL classification scheme, a substance with Koc 150 - 500 can be classified to have a medium mobility and with Koc 500 - 2000 to have a low mobility. Therefore 1,4 -diethylbenzene can be considered to have a medium to low mobility in soil, which is consistent with the binding capacity predicted.

 

Based on these results it is expected that soil and sediment could be a target for exposure. 

The distribution modelling done with EpiSuite indicate that 1,4-diethylbenzene will partition primarily to soil and water under the assumed pattern of chemical release (equal loading of water, soil and air) in the Level III model. These results reflect the Level III model's loading pattern plus the assumed moderately long half-life in water and soil and short half-life in air.

The assessment of these compartments is done in Section 9 of the CSA where the exposure assesment indicating the concentrations in each environmental compartment is shown.

No further study on adsorption/desorption is being proposed as according to Annex IX to REACH Regulation the study does not need to be conducted if based on the substance physicochemical properties the substance can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption (log Koc<3)
