Description of key information

MG was demonstrated to be cytotoxic to two cell lines of human origin.

Additional information

Malachite Green (MG) was demonstrated to be cytotoxic to two cell lines of human origin, whereas its major reduced metabolite found in fish, Leucomalachite Green (LG), was not. The HEp-2 cells were more sensitive than Caco-2 cells to MG toxic effects, probably for their lower metabolic capacity; so far, the latter represent the most relevant model to human exposure. Besides, also in these cellular models, MG reduces proliferation capability and impairs mitochondrial activity (Stammati et al. 2005).
